Recently, a touring author at Powell's said, "Portland seems like the coolest city in America. Why is that?" After thinking about it, we decided that it was because other cities our size like to bring culture in from the outside. Portland has naturally grown its own culture and it just keeps growing and changing. But there's also an inspiring sense of openness here. People are encouraged to do creative things.
