Our five year-old calls Mount Hood "that fake mountain." I thought it
was because it was too beautiful, only in a movie could a mountaintop
look that good, but then I realized it was because it was missing
sometimes as we were heading east, seemingly taken in during the rain.

My kids are zoo nuts. We went three times a week when my oldest was
little, and weekly for a decade. I never got bored wandering with a kid
in tow. I kept thinking of fresh places to stash bodies in future books.
The polar bear enclosure is particularly appealing.
