Every kid is a writer. But in order to develop their talent, students need teachers and parents to become artistic role models — providing critical access to professional writers and writing experiences.

Wordstock Classroom Residency (grades K-8)
Wordstock also offers writing-focused residencies to K-8 schools that are not affiliated with The Right Brain Initiative.
A literary arts residency from a Wordstock writer will build far more than your students’ writing skills. A collaboratively planned residency with a professional writer will enhance and bolster your existing literary arts curriculum, bringing a unique presence into your classroom and leaving you with a supply of writing techniques to use again and again. Wordstock writers have extensive experience teaching, planning collaboratively with teachers and engaging students’ creativity. When we’re in your classroom, your students will:
• Explore the Traits with a collaborative project led by a professional writer.
• Employ tools and exercises that will further develop their own unique voices as writers and allow them to better articulate their ideas across every curriculum area.
• Gain confidence in and ownership of their artistic capabilities as a writer, poet, songwriter, playwright or screenplay writer.
Residencies are customized for each school and are scheduled between the writer and the school. Residencies are at least 5-days in length. Find out more about our participating writer-artists.
Classroom Residency in Partnership with the Right Brain Initiative:
In 2009, Wordstock joined The Right Brain Initiative in an effort to ensure that the arts played a critical, not supplemental, role in our children’s education. The Right Brain Initiative is forging a sustainable program model – strengthened by public/private partnerships – for arts education in Oregon public schools. As the Right Brain Initiative’s literary arts provider, Wordstock writers collaborate with RBI partner schools to create one-of-a-kind arts-integrated experiences. Find out more about our RBI roster.
Family Write Night
Family Write Nights give students and their families an opportunity to share the experience of writing together. Led by Wordstock writers, Family Write Nights let students showcase their abilities and provide parents with valuable tips for helping their kids with writing.
Family Write Nights are fun, activity-based, 90-minute workshops/celebrations that allow parents and students to share in the experience of completing a creative writing project together. This evening event lets students showcase their abilities and gives parents an opportunity to gain insight into the writing instruction that is part of their child’s academic day.
Family Write Nights are held in the evenings and take place in a school building or community center. These events are best for groups of up to 40-50 people and are scheduled according to what fits best within the school community calendar.
Parents as Partners
Parents play a significant role in their child’s academic development. They often ask, “How can I help my child in writing at home without taking over?” Gain confidence in your ability to constructively coach your child in writing and support the development of his or her unique voice by mastering the simple, effective, and engaging tools provided in this workshop.
Parents as Partners workshops are parents-only, 90-minute programs led by Wordstock writers, who provide specially-designed resource packets and tools to parents to give them a better understanding of their child’s curricular responsibilities in school. Parents leave with a handout containing 27 tips for conferencing with their child on writing, and leave feeling secure in the role they play in their child’s writing success.
Parents as Partners workshops are held in the evenings and take place in a school building or community center. These events are best for groups of up to 40-50 people and are scheduled according to what fits best within the school community calendar.
