Call for Entries: Noir Flash Fiction Contest

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Dim the lights, put on some slow-burning jazz, and loosen your tie as you take the craft of flash fiction writing and apply it to the seedy, crime-riddled world of noir fiction. Our partner, p:ear, has set a 500-word limit and $15 entry fee, and the author of the winning story will receive a $50 gift certificate to Powell’s Bookstore and other prizes. The top three stories will be read at “p:ear noir” the fund raising event on October 7th from 7-9pm, with proceeds benefiting p:ear.

Complete details and entry forms can be found on the p:ear website.

This year’s judge is esteemed nature writer and National Book Award winner Barry Lopez and he’s waiting for your entry to the contest. We understand it’s down to panic time to make sure every word, sentence and paragraph are well placed. Get those pens, typewriters and laptops churning and send your entry to:

Don’t forget to check the submission guidelines.

Happy Writing!

Ready, Set, Write!

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Deadlines can be great motivators. That’s the premise, at least, behind a slew of create-under-pressure events, like National Novel Writing Month and the 48-hour film project. Last week, Portland’s Indigo Editing hosted their own twist on this theme: Sledgehammer. In distinctly Portland style, the event incorporated a scavenger hunt for cues that had to be incorporated into the final story, due 36 hours after kickoff.

Read more about the event and the participants in yesterday’s Oregonian.

Come see the Sledgehammer winner read at Wordstock on Saturday, at 11:30 on the Community of Writers stage. (Check the schedule here.)

Do deadlines spark your creativity? Have you been part of these events? Are you Nanowrimo-ing this November? Let us know!
