W.
S. Di Piero is a poet, essayist, and translator. He is the author of
eight books of poetry, most recently Chinese Apples - New and
Selected Poems (2007), Brother Fire (2006) and Skirts and
Slacks (2001).. He writes about art for the San Diego Reader
and has published three collections of essays and criticism on art,
literature, and personal experience: Memory and Enthusiasm: Essays
1975-1985 (1989); Out of Eden: Essays on Modern Art (1991);
and Shooting the Works (1996). His translations include
Leopardi's Pensieri (1984) and The Ellipse: Selected Poems of
Leonardo Sinisgalli (1983). Di Piero serves as a consulting editor of
Pequod and Southwest Review. His honors include a
Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and a
Lila Wallace–Reader’s Digest Writers’ Award. He lives
in San Francisco and teaches at Stanford University.
